Broken Side Windows: Here’s How to Temporarily Fix One

Most crimes that involve vehicles are ‘smash and grab’ crimes, where robbers take the first few things they can get their hands on.

While it’s a great idea to keep all your possessions hidden away if you choose to keep them in your car, what do you do after a thief has smashed your car window and run away?

Call 911, of course. But that doesn’t change the fact that a broken window is a safety hazard for you and your family. If you’re not able to find a 24-hour auto glass replacement service, you might have to minimize the hazard with the help of a temporary fix.

A temporary repair will protect the insides of your car and also prevent passengers from getting any cuts.

Read ahead to find out how you can do so:

Try To Remove All the Broken Glass

Sharp pieces of broken glass can cause serious injuries. The last thing you want on top of your damaged car and stolen possessions is a physical injury.

Wipe as many broken pieces of glass as you can. This is the first step in ensuring the safety of all the people who use the car. While removing the glass, you also need to make sure that you don’t get hurt, so it’s a great idea to wear protective gloves.

Start cleaning the windowpane by picking up the bigger pieces of glass first. Then, use a vacuum to get rid of all the smaller pieces. Place the vacuum close to the window seal in order to get all the little pieces that might still be stuck inside the frame.

Wipe the Window Frame

Use a dampened cloth to wipe the window frame and seal. In the time interval between when the glass was broken and when you start fixing it, the windowpane might have collected dust in its frame. Wiping it off will ensure that you don’t have any dirt and dust sticking to your tape when you start applying it in the next step.

Seal the Window

This step lends a measure of temporary protection to your car. Use clear packing tape and start applying it vertically strip by strip. Always paste the tape from inside of the car; otherwise, it’ll peel off the paint.

Start by applying one strip vertically on one side of the window, overlapping it with another strip that’s applied in a horizontal direction. Continue doing this until all the pieces overlap another and are successfully covering the entire windowpane.

Using a packing tape instead of a cardboard is a good way to prevent moisture from seeping into your car. Cardboard is an alternative, but it can become wet and gets damaged easily.
