De-Ice your Vehicle the Right Way!
Do cars catch frostbite? Yes, they drape themselves in powdered snow on cold winter nights, annoying you beyond belief when you wake up for the office and are running late. However, haste cleaning and forceful removing of ice might isn’t the way to go as it can damage your car.
On the other hand, since Houston experiences mild to cool winters with moisture droplets wandering now and then, driving with an icy windshield isn’t the best idea either.
So what do you do now? This article sheds light on how to de-ice your vehicle the right way.
Use De-Icing Spray
A de-icing spray is a combination of chemicals that quickly loosen and melt the ice. You can purchase one from the market, or you can also make your own de-ice squirt. Here are your options:
Alcohol and Water
Combine water and isopropyl alcohol in 30% and 70% proportions, respectively, in a spray bottle. This liquid freezes at 5°C; spraying it on your windshield has a rapid effect. You can also use surgical spirit as an alternative to isopropyl alcohol.
Salt/Vinegar and Water
Add about two scoops of salt or vinegar to a water spray bottle. This liquid is effective in melting the ice because of the lower freezing temperature. It’s also sprayed on the windshield at night as a preventive measure.
Moist Towel
Keeping a moist towel on your windscreen overnight prevents your windshield from frostbite. You can do this if you don’t have a de-icing spray.
Precautions
Store your de-ice spray at room temperature. Also, never use hot water to remove ice from your windshield. It might crack or chip because of a thermal shock.
Turn the Car Ignition Engine On
This is another right way to de-ice your vehicle. Get inside your car and start it. Set its temperature to the highest settings. Then turn on the windshield blower, defroster, or heater if you have one. The car’s warmth will melt the ice lying on its top. To prevent condensation inside the car, turn on the A.C.
Fasten the Process
While ice continues to melt when the engine starts, it melts from beneath. To fasten this process, use de-icing spray from above, and set it on the windshield for about 2 minutes. After that, wipe off the melted snow with the help of a clean towel.
Don’t use de-icing spray excessively; an adequate amount to melt the snow is sufficient.
Precautions
Avoid using an ice scraper on the windshield for clearing the ice because it can leave scratch marks. Use a soft bristle brush for rubbing off the snow from the car’s windshield.
