Windshield Laws in Texas—Here’s All You Need to Know
Texas is very stringent when it comes to transportation laws. The state regulates how car owners should drive their cars, what necessary licenses they need to obtain, and how they should maintain their vehicles. Windshield restrictions are also extensively covered by state law.
Let’s take a look at a few of these provisions:
Wipers
As per Texas law, all windshields must have windshield wipers that can be controlled by the driver of the car. This is to ensure that the driver can effectively remove any moisture from the windshield.
As far as wiper installation is concerned, it’s imperative that the blades touch the glass evenly throughout the surface, or else, the wiping action could possibly result in scratches, or even cracks in the worst cases.
Glass Type
As far as the windshield itself is concerned, it must be made of safety glass. The same goes for the window glass.
Safety glass is a combination of several layers of glass. The layers are held together by glazing material in between. This makes the glass much less likely to break or shatter during an accident.
Obstructions
Another important aspect of this law is the threat of potential obstructions. Car owners are not permitted to attach anything to the windshield that may prove to be an obstruction or hindrance. No object should impair the driver’s ability to see the road ahead of them.
This is also why all labels and stickers should be placed on the side of the rear windows. As far as stickers that are mandated by law are concerned, place them on the lowest corner of the windshield.
If you’re opting for a tinted windshield, you can only get a non-reflective tint. The law doesn’t permit you to install a fully tinted windshield. This tint can either be above the AS-1 line or only on the top five inches. Even for the top few inches, the tint must not be amber, blue, or red. This is because a fully tinted windshield can hinder the driver’s field of view.
Windshield cracks
Generally speaking, the windshield itself is not inspected for cracks by the Texas Department of Public Safety. Even if your windshield is slightly chipped, you could pass the inspection.
However, wipers play an important role in this regard. If the crack is causing the wiper to tear, you could be fined. Similarly, if the crack is causing the windshield to either become concave or convex to the point that the wiper gets detached from the windshield, you’ll be fined.
